During the past month, i've been trying to get Noah to sleep without holding him and bouncing on the ball. Instead, we both went to bed together when he seemed tired, and i would stay with him, pat him until he fell asleep "on his own". He would crawl around the bed, and fuss. Often cry pretty hard right before he fell asleep.
Then, a turning point came this past Sunday night.
We were again in bed together, he seemed really happy to be lying down. ZM was still in transit, and Noah hasn't seen daddy for four days. Noah was lying in my arms, facing away from me, looking at ZM's pillow, playing with the t-shirt ZM sleeps in, babbling for a little while. Next thing i knew he was sound asleep. No fuss, and so fast!
I thought it was just an exceptional day. Maybe i really tired him out since we were out having brunch with Gui and Matthew, then went shopping in the Mall.
But last night and tonight were both the rerun of Sunday night! Putting Noah to bed has suddenly turned from an hour-long struggle into an half hour breeze. The best part was Noah remained happy the whole time! Amazing!
Eight Month and one week old. Noah finally gets the sleep routine. bliss.

Noah

Rapid Development
Noah is learning new things everyday. We are overwhelmed by his rapid development nowadays.
He is very comfortable "cruising" in his little jail, he does it exactly the same way as we traverse a rock face when climbing.
He is practicing balance while crouching down and then standing up all with one handheld only. And he really wanted to let go of that one handheld too.
He is eager to walk if we hold him from the back. With long stride.
This morning he started jumping up and down while holding on the edge of his crib. It looked as if he was dancing disco.
While we are both in bed, he would push himself up on all fours, then lay his head on me to rest. It was so cute it melt my heart every time he does that.

The Joy of Climbing
After pulling himself up to a standing position, Noah started exploring other maneuvers that he could accomplish in the crib. As long as i don't leave the room, he could be content to practice on his own for up to an hour.
Watching him learning to use his limbs this way reminded me of climbing. It was so similar.
"okay, two hands holding on bummer holds, now can i reach further diagonally?" gingerly freed up left hand and trying to reach...close, closer, got it! whew!
now, can i move the other hand over too? FELL! crap. try again.
right hand out first, can't reach, how about i twist my body this way, ah, better. let me move my feet closer too, then. now that's much better.
It goes on like this over and over. It was fun to watch Noah gets better and better from practice. He was much faster at adapting and progressing in his crib than me on the rock though.
I wonder whether adults love climbing so much because it allows us to go back in time and remember how much fun it was to learn to use our limbs again.
Gui said it also explained why kids naturally love rock climbing. It came to them very easily since it was so fresh in their mind how to use their bodies to scale the space, either horizontally or vertically.

Noah Stood up!
Monday night, i sat Noah down in his crib, gave him a toy he loved to play with, and was going to leave the room for a bit. He surprised me by grabbing the bar of the diaper changing station attached to his crib, and pulled him up to a standing position. He did it so quickly and efficiently, i thought he must have been practicing it during the day. When i asked ZM about it, he was surprised too.
When i walked back to the crib with ZM and hoping Noah would show off his new trick, he just pulled himself to a kneeling position and started chewing the bar, refused to go further.
too bad it was too dark to take a photo. What a moment!
